BUSINESS

Gas Tax discussion – Mayor John Thomas introduced Commissioner Heyward Strong to speak to the Executive Board regarding the need for a Special Meeting.  Commissioner Strong explained that some of the cities have agreed that they would like to ask the County Commission for a 60/40 split of the gas tax versus the 67/33 split that is in place now.  Commissioner Strong asked that each city tell the board whether they support or do not support the 60/40 split.  Councilman Mel Ponder from Destin started the discussion.  He explained that he is a little apprehensive about the new split because it would mean that Destin could possibly lose money.

Commissioner Strong stated that the point of the meeting is only to find out how all of the cities feel about the new split.  After going around the room, each representative stated that they would support the 60/40 split.

After the unanimous vote, Mayor Thomas asked that everyone write letters to the County Commission and attend the County Commission Meeting on Tuesday.  Dutch Payne suggested electing a spokesperson and nominated Commissioner Heyward Strong.  Commissioner Strong stated that he would not be able to do it.  Mayor Thomas suggested Mayor Glenda Glover be the spokesperson.  Reid Silverboard asked if Mayor Craig Barker and Mayor Glenda Glover could work it out themselves because he is not sure of Mayor Glover’s schedule.  Mayor Thomas again suggested Mayor Glover.  Mayor Glover entered and stated that she would be able to be the spokesperson.

Mayor Glover moved that we meet next Thursday, May 22, 2003 , after the outcome of the County Commission Meeting.  Councilman Payne seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.
